Council of Elders

The Nigerian Council of Elders serves as a guiding body, composed of esteemed leaders who uphold traditional values and resolve community disputes.

HISTORY OF THE NIGERIAN COUNCIL OF ELDERS (NCE)

Nigerian Council of Elders is a premier organisation in the united kingdom and was founded in 1989. It was set up by a group of Nigerians that came
together to welcome and organised a reception for the visiting Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom, President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. After the President’s visit they came together and decided Ito constitute a formal group to meet regularly and share common interests. Hence the Nigerian Council of Elders was formed

It is now one of the longest standing Nigerian organisations in the UK and uniquein the sense that it is age specific in order to best meet the needs of its members. The NCE aspires to be a forward looking association that provides a future pathway to the oncoming generation of elders. We meet every 2 months to share and exchange views. We also interact and work closely with
CANUK, NIDO and other Nigerians groups in the UK. We have in the past provided materials and monetary support to some organisations in the UK as well as Nigeria. This year we intend to support the Sickle Cell organisation.

It is non-political, non-religious and non-tribalistic association of all Nigerians who are 50 years plus, who are positively concerned about Nigeria and are committed to work for good will and peace in Nigeria, are committed to encouraging and promoting high ethical standards in their daily lives.

Our priorities are:
to provide opportunities for individuals to make friends and enjoy time with people from their communities, whilst also being our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers to prevent Isolation and loneliness through interaction and social activities to take a keen interest in our members’ welfare.

At times of sickness and bereavement, the Association is there as a companion Welfare of its members is paramount. Isolation and loneliness are addressed simultaneously. At times of sickness and bereavement, the association is a companion, as it is in times of joy and celebration.

ACHIEVEMENTS

We meet bi-monthly to deliberate, socialize and share views on issues of common interest.

In addition to our aims and objectives, we organised day trips for members and pay home or hospital visits necessary. We celebrate with members for birthdays and weddings in the family. The Council also supports applications for visas or passports for our members.

Funding for its activates are provided by membership subscriptions donations and fund raising activities

Each Nigerian High Commissioner is our patron and the NCE has had the opportunity to have direct contact with the High Commission and to seek and provide advice to the mission when necessary.

NCE members were given the opportunity to visit the Passport section of the High Commission in response to complaints received from many Nigerians insight into the workings of the Passport Office, which led to some welcome with regards to obtaining Passports and travel documents. This gave s
improvements.

The NCE is predominantly an elderly group fortunate to enjoy the privilege
and accolades that come with it. We all ray and hope to grow old healthily and gracefully. Our door is open to new members and if you consider yourself young enough please join. Forms are available for collection from the Honourable Secretary.
